Season a tribute to Composer

CALYPSO LOVERS will be treated to top class kaiso when the Klassic Ruso Calypso Tent opens on January 27 at the Mas Camp Pub on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook.

A star-studded cast will be performing for patrons that includes Allrounder, Hamidullah, Almanac, Brother Ebony Versatile, Kassman, Stanley Adams, Intruder, El Hombre and Disciple. Some of the other calypsonians carded to perform are Alicia McKenzie, Alicia Gift, Dictator, Zessman, Dr Rhythm, Dr Will B, Bro Akil, Brother Rap, Revealer, QP and Phella. Popular calypsonian and chairman of the North Zone of Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO), Hamidullah Wahid, said the masters of ceremony for the tent will be Hot Foot and Jennilly, while music will be provided by the Klassic Ruso All Stars.
Admission will be $40 and $50.

According to the public relations officer of the zone, Elton Scantlebury, the season would be dedicated to veteran calypsonian Composer (Fred Mitchell) for his contributions to the art-form. “From every Thursday after the opening, we’d be having a vintage segment of kaisos. We’ve also selected members of the cast to do vintage Kaisos. Conqueror will be part of this vintage kaiso programme.” He added that TUCO’s North Zone and its membership want to wish the Mighty Terror a speedy recovery from his illness. Hamidullah,  a calypsonian for over 20 years, said that his two big numbers for Carnival 2004 will be a social commentary called “The New Manning” and a humorous kaiso titled “Father.”

The bespectacled Hamidullah has had several classic kaiso hits over his 20-year career. They include: “Ya Can’t Land,” “One Stick Ah Matches,” “Watch Dey Cat Iron Drive,” “Dis Game” and Old Man Darling.” Scantlebury said that throughout the years, the zone has been able to produce Young Kings and National Womens Action Committee (NWAC) champions. He mentioned that the Klassic Ruso Calypso Tent cast would be having a number of outside calypso shows in such places as Petit Valley, Tunapuna, Chaguanas, Point Fortin and Rio Claro. Hamidullah pointed out that the zone produced the Most Humorous Calypso champion in 2003 and it was the tent’s intention to maintain the high standard of rich, healthy, kaiso entertainment for the country’s kaiso lovers. “We’d be giving them songs that can be sung in the Vatican,” he proudly said.
