Does Cro-Cro care for the poor?
THE EDITOR: Cro Cro’s calypso “Face Reality” does everything but face reality. He seeks to romanticise the crime of kidnapping as the poor’s revenge on the corrupt and dishonest business community and politicians, who are perceived as being responsible for their state of poverty. His calypso however fails to acknowledge the true reality.
Firstly, every kidnapping involves the use of stolen cars. News reports indicate that the cars of choice are B13 and B14 Sunnys. These cars aren’t owned by the rich or corrupt, but by the same poor people who he claims to represent. Second, all kidnappers are armed with guns which have been either illegally imported into the country or stolen. In many instances security guards are the target of these criminals, who are attacked and occasionally killed for their firearm. These guards are again poor people on whose behalf he claims to be singing. These guns also are used in the gang wars that lead to the deaths of many youths in the poor and depressed areas of the country that Cro Cro claims to represent.
Third, the money from these nefarious activities are not used to put food on the table or help poor struggling people, but instead in the consumption of fancy cars, designer clothes, alcohol, drugs and the prostitution of our women. In other words, the promotion of a culture that leads to the further impoverishment of the very people he claims to represent. If Cro Cro really cared for the poor he would speak out against all crimes against the poor, especially those perpetrated by themselves, on themselves.
