Regiment for Hire?
THE EDITOR: In a promotional feature for the launch of Machel Montano & Xtatik’s new soca parade at the National Flour Mills, it was stated that six members of the Trinidad and Tobago’s Regiment were to perform a drum set. Then I note in the media of today (Jan 25, 2004) that Machel tried to suppress freedom of the press when they tried to take photographs of his Powder Puff girls routine.
The first thing that citizens should know, is that under what circumstances are the Regiment hired out whether it be to play music or to provide whatever non security services to fetes and soca artistes. In addition, if these officers were there at the National Flour Mills when Machel unveiled his latest novelty to compliment his wining, what action did they take? Did they caution him? I was under the opinion that the security services were supposed to be on full alert at this time and every man was needed in case of an emergency. Clearly, when it comes to soca and fete, any number can play.
