National patrimony for a few pieces of silver
THE EDITOR: Prime Minister Manning has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Repsol that perhaps would included British Gas. This by itself spells danger. Such wide meaning words may mean enforceable terms and conditions in a jurisdiction outside of Trinidad and Tobago that can adversely affect our full entitlement to income from the Gas Fields.
The Prime Minister must not be allowed to sell the national patrimony for a few pieces of silver. It is almost reminiscent of the Chief selling his subjects to the English traders. If this agreement is to be enforced in the Elba Islands where the big gas terminals are, then we are in chains. Independent legal counsel must be appointed immediately to vet the several terms and conditions. In default, the Memorandum of Understanding may deprive the nation of billions due to secrecy. Let the “Memorandum of Understanding” be a public document for discussion.
