Waste matter going to Mt Hope
Health Minister John Rahael said the problem with the incinerator at Port-of-Spain General Hospital is “being addressed.”
A newspaper story highlighted the problems being experienced at the health facility because the new incinerator has been idle since it was delivered last May. Commenting on this situation yesterday, Rahael said the problem stemmed from a dispute between the supplier and the Ministry’s purchaser — the National Insurance Property Development Company Ltd (NIPDEC) after the incinerator was damaged “while it was being loaded or off-loaded.”
Rahael said a meeting between the supplier and NIPDEC took place a few weeks ago to try to resolve the matter. In the absence of a functioning incinerator at PoSGH, this facility and St Ann’s Hospital have been sending waste matter to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope to be burnt.
