Congrats to West Indies cricketers — for now!
THE EDITOR: It gives me great pleasure to be able to congratulate instead of criticise the West Indies cricketers on their stunning, aggressive performance in the 4th 1-Day match versus South Africa on Sunday, February 1, 2004. Undoubtedly there is a vast difference in batting in the daylight with bright sunny weather, to the overcast conditions with the ball moving about and the unfamiliarity of playing under lights in the other games, but I do feel if we were more positive in our approach to those day/night encounters, particularly the 2nd 1-Day which we lost by 16 runs, the score to date would have been 2/1 in our favour with the one abandoned game, going into the 5th and final match.
Gayle continues to baffle me with his approach, aggressive in the Test match but very tentative in the 1-Days. It was therefore very gratifying to see his positive approach in this 4th 1-Day. If he would only get some dancing lessons to help him move his feet, how much better he could be. To be honest my heart is in my mouth for the 5th 1-Day match, as I am so wary of this WI team which is very consistent in its inconsistency, (good today and horrid tomorrow), that I will not bet on them for another good performance on Wednesday February 3, but will hope and pray for a miracle, particularly with a reduction in the number of wides and no balls bowled among everything else.
