4 rides for Irish apprentice

Irish Apprentice Peter Mathers has been booked for four rides on the Arima Race Club Day Four card on Saturday at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. Mathers arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night on a prize trip for winning the Apprentice Series of races at Pontefract racecourse in the United Kingdom last season. The 22-year-old Mathers is attached to trainer Allan Berry’s stable in England. He has landed 23 winners since being granted his licence three years ago. Mathers went winless when he began learning the trade in his first year in Ireland. He then went over to  join Berry’s yard the following year and scored 11 in his first term in England, and improved on his score last year by going one better. The youngster with a friendly smile had his first feel of the main course in Arima yesterday morning, getting aboard Ooze for trainer Shaffique Khan in the first session and was seen out later on Adoring Ruby.

He then had a workshop in the boardroom of the Trinidad and Tobago Racing Authority, where he gave an insight to a number of local jockeys of how stables in England operate and the normal tasks of  apprentices before they were allowed to exercise horses. He explained further about the operations when he is booked for rides by his stable and has to travel with the runners. Mathers has not been offered rides in either the feature or the supporting highlight on Saturday’s ten-race card. But the lightweight, who seems to be enjoying his short stay will get aboard Morgan Heritage in the second event, an allowance event over 1200 metres before donning the silks of Bound To Dot Com in the following event over a similar trip. He will then watch two events from the jockeys’ room before he is called to duty on Rocket Booster in the West Indian bred three-year-old event, and will then have to wait until the final event to partner Hyarima.
