No alcohol while on duty
THE EDITOR: I am writing to you concerning a very disturbing and shocking incident that I saw taking place on Friday January 16, 2004 at about 4.55 pm. One the date mentioned above, I was passing in a vehicle when I saw an E999 patrol car parked in front of a bar at the corner of La Puerta Avenue and the Diego Martin Main Road. The rear door was open and several policemen were sitting in the vehicle. I observed two policemen, dressed in berets and uniform, with opened bottles of beer in their hands.
I was travelling in a maxi taxi and did not manage to get the licence plate of that police vehicle. However, I think this is cause for serious concern, when men of the law, who are supposed to protect and look after the nation and be an example to other citizens, are seen openly partaking of a mind-altering beverage while on duty. I am, therefore, calling on you and the other authorities to put measures in place so that police officers would be made to show greater awareness of their duties and responsibilities. Kindly give this matter your urgent attention, as such behaviour, as that which I witnessed near La Puerta Avenue, can contribute to the deterioration of our society.
