Diamond Utd unbeaten in South
Diamond United cricket club have made an excellent start to the 2004 South Zonal Ramsingh’s limited overs series with three wins in the first three rounds. In the first game at Diamond, the home team batted first and struggled to 93/8 in 29 overs. MYO in reply were then shut out for 79 with skipper Sonnylal Kanhai coming to the fore with 4/20. In the second round, Diamond was even more forceful whipping La Fortune by the handsome margin of 90 runs. Diamond batted first and scored 130/8 off their allotted 20 overs. In reply La Fortune’s innings last just 14.3 overs, as they were bowled out for an embarrassing 40 runs. Leading the way for Diamond was former Usine Ste Madeleine player Anand Ajodha who grabbed 2/10 with his medium pacers.
Last weekend, Diamond tackled OJay’s Sports and defeated them by 131 runs at Diamond. After totalling 18/9 in 29 overs, Diamond skittled out Ojay’s for 57 in reply with I Harry taking 6/20. Meanwhile opener Winston Duncan the former PowerGen national league cricketer has returned to the Diamond team for the 2004 season. Duncan a powerful hitter of the ball started off his cricketing career with Diamond United and now wants to finish off there. Elsewhere, neighbouring Rahamuts Evergreen have also been in top form getting two wins from as many matches. Last Saturday they played Young Lions and defeated them by 40 runs.
Batting first at Oropouche, Evergreen scored 191/7 in 25 overs with national scalectric champ Junior Joseph top-scoring with 51. Giving good support was Nigel Ferreira with 31. Young Lions in their turn at the wicket were routed for 151 — with Syed Mohammed taking 4/13. On Sunday against Playboys the home team made just 49 all out, as Joseph grabbed 2/10 and Ivan Nandlal 3/16). Evergreen then romped to victory at 55/1 with Syed Mohammed scoring 31 not out. Joseph who was instrumental in taking Petrotrin into the Southern Superleague for this season, parted ways with the club and is now at Evergreen. Speaking to Newsday he said: “It is unfortunate that I am not there with Petrotrin in the Superleague but I am very happy to be with Rahamut’s Evergreen and will be hoping to help them to win the league and gain promotion this year.”
