DPP owes citizens an explanation
THE EDITOR: The whole population is complaining about the Chandra Narayansingh murder trial. It was first degree murder — well planned and admitted by the murderer with no remorse. What gave the DPP the brainwave to change the charge of murder to one of manslaughter? He must give us, the citizens of this country a full explanation about his decision. He cannot just keep quiet.
Does it mean that anybody can kill someone and claim it was a contract job and avoid capital punishment? One cannot plea-bargain with a cold-blooded murderer even if he promises to disclose who gave him the job. If he does not reveal the name of the hirer before his execution, so be it. Only the Mercy Committee can recommend variation of a sentence. So the DPP has a lot to explain to the public. We have lost faith in the Judicial System. What does the Law Society have to say about this unacceptable turn of events?
