Newcomers stun W Connection in Carapichaima Under-17 f/ball
NEWCOMERS Phase IV Nationals have scored a stunning upset over defending champions W Connection in the 2004 Carapichaima Under-17 Football Super League.
Keron Garib got the first of a double in Sunday’s match at Edinburgh 500 Recreation Ground in the third minute from the penalty spot. And he rifled in his second in the 14th to give Phase IV a 2-0 lead in the Group “A” match. But Devon Drayton reduced the scores with a 16th minute goal to trigger what appeared as a W Connection resurgence.
It was not to be however, as Johan Marcano blasted in a 59th minute goal to increase the lead to 3-1 only for a 67th minute own-goal to bring Connection back into the match. Rondell Carvaldo put the fixture beyond the reach of the champions in the 70th minute however. Trendsetter Hawks edged St Mary’s 1-0 on Saturday, on a goal by Kendell Gillard in the 40th minute to move into a tie at the top of the same group.
Point Fortin Civic Centre and Praesto Presto played to a 1-1 draw, denying the “Black City” boys from taking the overall Group “A” lead. Kona Modeste put “Black City” ahead after 28 minutes but Andy London grabbed a 55th minute equaliser. Gasparillo Youths climbed to the top of Group “B” with a 3-0 shut out of La Romain Lions at the Roopsingh Road Recreation Ground also on Sunday.
But both the Cruz International vs St James Jets and Superstar Rangers vs Cap Off Youths matches were postponed.
