Grenada PM plays down flying fish dispute
GRENADIAN Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell yesterday said the fishing impasse between Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados should not adversely affect Caribbean integration or this country’s drive to house the headquarters of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). Dr Mitchell made the observation after attending the funeral service for his half-brother, Godfrey Antoine, at Belgrove’s Funeral Home and Crematorium in San Fernando yesterday.
And, asked about Grenada’s position on the brewing “flying fish” controversy, Dr Mitchell identified regional cooperation as the only viable solution. “We’ve made the point over and over that the region needs as much cooperation as possible and clearly whatever dispute exists, we expect that it will be settled with a sense of understanding what is important for Caricom,” he said. “Caricom integration is a necessity,” Dr Mitchell said, adding that the Caribbean Court of Justice was also a fundamental ingredient of Caribbean integration and freedoms.
