Mahabir cracks first Carib Shield century

West Indies “B” team and Clarke Road United batsman Gregory Mahabir scored the first century of the inaugural Carib Shield on the opening day of the cricket competition against Green Arrow at Wilson Road yesterday. Mahabir hit an unbeaten 83-ball hundred that contained 12 fours to lead his team to 244 for three wickets off their allotted 30 overs. Lending good support was Kenton Thompson with 70 and Mahadeo Bodoe who made 48. Green Arrow will be chasing 245 runs for a win today from their 30 overs.

Across at Syne Village, PowerGen were also in good form, rattling up 269 for six wickets against Mayo Valleyboys. Nicholas Ramphal with 60 and Denzil James who made  55 topped the batters, as not even former national player Surujdath Mahabir now playing for Mayo could stop them. The former Clarke Road player ended with two wickets for 43. Runs were also on the menu at Inshan Ali Park, as Clico Preysal piloted by blistering half centuries from Shazam Babwah and Barbadian Ryan Hurley rocketed to 276 for seven. Babwah scored 85 and Hurley got 65. On a day when bat dominated ball, Tile It Central Sports player Lennox Cush starred with the ball. He grabbed a hat-trick en-route to figures of three for 12 as Las Lomas were restricted to 117 all out at Presentation College, Chaguanas. All matches will finish today, starting at 4.30pm.
