Reid warms up for Beacon series

Darren Reid had a cushion going into the recent final leg of the Wallerfield and Back Keep-fit Series ahead of the West Indies versus the World Cycling Series. And despite his third place finish on the day finished on 16 points four ahead of Christopher Gill who was second and Davis Alves in third on 10. After a minute’s silence for a fallen peer, the strong field proceeded from their starting point on the Foreshore to Wallerfield as a tight group with Reid at the head and Ricky Morris and Clinton Grant in tow.

On reaching Wallerfield the group became splintered with the front group comprising Heat Wave Cyclists Chris Gill, Shane Ferreira and Ako Keller, junior Christopher Sellier who won all the stages prior to this one and national Triathlon champ Jason Gooding. Reid, Costa and Grant trailed the front-runners as they passed Trincity with a 55 kilometre per hour wind at their backs and soon took charge with Reid, Costa and Ferreira in the top flight leaving the rest to compete for fourth and fifth places.

Fereira took the win with Costa in second and Reid in third. Chris Gill fought off a strong challenge from Sellier to complete the Heat Wave sweep. Sellier was the only cyclist to win all three stages in his category and finished on nine points ahead of Marc Codrington in second with two points and Gerome Brooks in third also on two points. Kelvin Lee Young was denied first place in the Veteran’s third stage by Gregory D’Andrade but still finished first on eight points with D’Andrade on five in second and Andy Chalmers third with two.
