Irresponsible statements made at Atlantic LNG protest
THE EDITOR: I am shocked and disappointed at certain statements made recently by individuals who are held in high esteem in our country. I was listening to the news in light of the current ALNG strike and I heard very disturbing remarks by a protesting worker, saying that the Prime Minister’s days are numbered. I am aware that some problems workers face are the racist treatment by some of the Bechtel International hierarchy, low wages, etc.
I support the protesting workers, yet I am baffled at the attacks on the Prime Minister rather than those who are causing them to feel inferior on the job. Why? How is it that the issues are so easily swayed. Also, where does the PSA President Mrs Jennifer Baptiste-Primus and ex-Minister (who can’t help the workers now) Larry Achong, get off, saying that the police and army were sent to brutalise the protesting workers, and that the Prime Minister is being reckless. What foolishness! Right thinking people in this country know that our police officers and soldiers don’t brutalise anybody. Why try so hard to make the situation at ALNG look worse than it really is? Why try to create a scandal?
There was someone else that made another irresponsible statement saying that they will make Point Fortin like Haiti. I remember clearly President Bush being very concerned about security for the energy reserves in our country, since they import most of their natural gas from here. It was very much a responsible move by Government to send National Security to the ALNG site in response to the irresponsible statements made.
