Weston fights in Barrackpore

FOR the first time ever professional boxing action will be brought to Barrackpore. The event takes place tomorrow, and if the assertions of promoter Timuldass Boodram are anything to go by, the card is just the first step down the road to taking the discipline to the next level in the community. Tomorrow’s card features three products of the White Eagle Boxing camp donning gloves at the Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive School. Iva Weston faces Crystal Lessie of Phoenix Boxing and Kickboxing Gym,  Melissa Quashie, daughter of Kim “Bonecrusher” Quashie, fighting “home girl” Vicky Boodram.

Kelvin George also of White Eagle will tangle with Waldron Brooks of Arima in a lightweight bout and Michael Agard is carded to fight Anthony Richardson. There will also be four amateur bouts, but the card is subject to the approval of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board. Weston is fresh off a fight in the United States of America against world number four Belinda Laracuente, where she impressed fans with her superior technique during a performance which she gained significant interest both regionally and internationally. The young fighter revealed at a press conference at the Mas Camp Pub yesterday,  the Laracuente bout provided good experience and facilitated her targeting specific areas of her training for future fights.

Already Weston has been offered several fights which include a bout against Yemen-born Canadian boxer Isra Girgreh, who has four title belts, on March 24 in Cincinnati, USA, and a title shot against Ana Pascal in June. Boodram, who has been touted as a future world champion by many in her camp and matchmaker Buxo Potts thanked all involved in her development to this point, and admonished Weston not to take the challenge of  Lessie lightly as she will be going for the jugular when the two meet tomorrow. All boxers involved in tomorrow’s card are advised that the weigh-in for the bout will take place at the Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive School at 4 pm today. General admission is $20, and gates open at 6 pm.  Action begins at 7 pm.
