Mason cops Plantations Seniors golf title
NEW course record holder Carl Mason of England, despite an even par round of 72 yesterday, held off his rivals to win the third annual Tobago Plantations Seniors Golf Classic at the Tobago Plantations Golf and Beach Resort. Mason who carded eight birdies over 18 holes on Saturday on the way to a course record round of 64, ended the 54-hole European Seniors Tour tournament with a five under par 207. For his success and enhancing his EST Order of Merit title, the 51-year-old Mason earned ?18,750. The winner finished three strokes ahead of Australian David Good who shot out of a pack of five golfers who were tied for fourth overnight, to snatch the runner-up spot with a final 210.
Third place was shared between last year’s runaway winner Terry Gale of Australia and South African Jeff Hawkes who both carded 69s yesterday for a final 212 score. Scotland’s John Chillas who was second after Saturday’s round, returned a one over par 73 yesterday to slide into fifth position, jointly with Argentina’s Horacio Carbonetti on 213. Horacio’s brother brother Luis, Englishman Ian Mosey and Aussie Hank Woodrome were next on 214. First day leader John Grace (USA) plumetted to joint 20th with a final score of 218, while lone Trinidadian Alan Mew was joint 29th with a score of 220.
