Hutson wins Southern Games 100m

WITH Prime Minister Patrick Manning looking on, Wanda Hutson beat Olympians Heather Samuel of Antigua and Trinidadian Ayana Hutchinson to take the women 100 metres title on opening day of the 2004 Southern Games at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, yesterday. To the sounds of the steel drums, the pint-sized Memphis Pioneer runner took the title in 11.25 seconds. The 19-year-old Hutson is currently preparing for the Carifta Games and this win would have boosted her confidence as both Samuel and Hutchinson competed at the 2002 Olympic Games in Sydney.

In the men 100 metres, Dion Rodriguez also of Memphis Pioneers won in a time of 10.37 seconds with Marc Dillon of Simplex second in 10.44 and Carlton Elvin of Petrotrin Sports Club third. In the men 1500m open, Vincentian Pamenos Ballantyne was beaten into fourth place by Venezuelan Nice Herrerra, runner-up and compatriot Juan Perez, with Trinidadian Carlan Arthur of Morvant Jets third. A large crowd was on hand to see the day’s  47-event programme. The action continues today with another 39 events.
