Beware of PNM self-preservation tactics
THE EDITOR: The people of Antigua and Barbuda have shown a sense of maturity in removing themselves from the grip of the Bird Dynasty after 50 years. It is fortunate that they did not adopt the “Bird till ah dead” attitude lest(er) they would have surely died. The propensity to self-preservation appears to be the sole objective of some parties in power. Only in backward third world nations does the populace remain loyal to a governing party, which keeps them in bondage, living below the poverty line, in squalor and depending on handouts for their very existence.
The Birds felt that by running the Antiguan and Barbudan government like a family affair it would have enabled them to sustain loyalty in government and thereby remain in office indefinitely. However in that island of 442 sq km and a population of 85,000 with little or no natural resources save the sugar cane and investments in Tourism the people have come to the realisation that enough is enough.
The removal of the Bird Dynasty in Antigua and Barbuda coincides with the self-preservation and closing ranks in the PNM in Trinidad and Tobago. Two back benchers have eaten humble pie to serve the Master, who has treated them with disdain, disrespect and contempt only goes to show to what extent that members of the PNM will stoop to maintain power.
Self-preservation can only cause divisions in a society. The salaries of MPs have been increased twice to ensure loyalty to the leader. The PM has a one man show with 32 puppets enjoying 30 pieces or rather TT$30,000 a month plus. These MPs are unable to carry out the wishes of their constituencies. Are they in fact writing their own epitaph? The closing of ranks for self-preservation in the PNM will cause the extending of the olive branch to all those agencies, which are now at variance with the PNM government. Beware of Trojan Horses trying to win you with honest trifles to betray you in deepest consequences.
