Highway design contributes to death

THE EDITOR: The Solomon Hochoy Highway will fail any safety design audit due to its narrow separation between the north and southbound lanes. Numerous deaths occur each year when trucks, maxi-taxis and cars cross the median and collide with oncoming and unsuspecting traffic. The tangible and intangible cost due to these accidents is enormous to individuals, insurance companies and our country.

Immediate action must be taken by the minister responsible for highways to stop this carnage now! Corrective action could be taken by installing three feet high metal guardrails on the shoulder of the fast lane, in both directions. This will reduce the crossing of vehicles into opposite traffic. However, a maintenance crew must respond effectively to repair rails damaged due to accidents.

Mr Minister, the human resources needed to start this project are currently available through the likes of CEPEP/Small Contractors Programme. Please use your good office to harness this manpower, procure the metal rails and begin installation. The life you save maybe that of a relative or your own. Act today!
