Army blow lid off Police in Championship Division
DEFENCE FORCE blew the lid off the Police netball dominance, when they defeated their arch-rivals 39-36 in their thrill-a-minute Pearl Francis Championship Division clash at the Lystra Lewis Courts, Princes Building. Saturday’s match was nip-and-tuck throughout, although marked by some lack-lustre shooting. At the end of the first quarter the teams were knotted up 9-9, but the Policewomen edged into a one-goal lead at the half-time break 19-18.
When the whistle sounded for the end of the third period it was all square again 29-29, but the Army-Coast Guard women managed to pull ahead and hold on to the final blast. National goal-shoot Anastascia Wilson scored 24 goals from 33 attempts and goal-attack Diana Pierre 15 of 27 for Defence Force while for Police, goal-shoot Euphemia Huggins netted 14 of 26 attempts and goal-attack Donna Elise Charles 22 of 32. In the other match in the same five-team division, Arima United led all the way to beat Soul City 40-35. Michelle Boyce scored 17 of 21, Debra Beckles had 16 of 25 and Tricia Liverpool two of four scored for Soul City.
