QRC win CIBT b-ball
QUEEN’S Royal College (QRC) came from trailing Arima Senior Comprehensive 55-54 at the end of the third quarter to emerge 79-71 winners at the final whistle to take the 2004 Colleges Invitational Basketball Tournament crown at the Maloney Indoor Sport Arena. The final game of the CIBT on Friday pitted the convincing East Zone champs Arima against the sturdy QRC who claimed the North Zone Under-20 title. Arima aided in attack by Johnson’s Finishing School inspiration Fabrice Fisher, specially invited for the competition, led 20-19 at the end of the first quarter but QRC applied the discipline to go into the half with a 44-30 lead.
Skipper Kendall Jagdeosingh gave the QRC team a hard time with his ball handling and marshalling of the charge down court, his 17 points was vital to keeping them in the game as Randy Greenidge with 21 and Michael Fredrick who ended on 12 also making valiant attempts. With his stature belying his ability Darren Cowie continued to be a vital on-court presence for QRC even in the post-season tournament and got his players to translate the direction of coach Elgin Ferris into QRC’s third CIBT win having taken the crown in 1999 and 2000 prior to their latest triumph.
Lori Adams 27 came up with a game high 27 points as Dean Williams’ 21 and Perry Seale’s ten point total took the edge off the Arima attack and relaxed the rest of QRC’s game into a pace which contrasted beautifully against the high-speed antics of Arima. All schools who participated in the Trinidad and Tobago Schools Basketball Association’s NGC/ Express League competitions are invited to participate in the CIBT Slamdunk and 3-Point Shootout contests. Following these early rounds of competition will be the Ma Pau All-Star Festival, featuring the National Senior Women’s team versus the 2003 National Champion Maloney Pacers, the Under-20 Boys All-Stars and the Streetball Festival.
