Rampaul, Dillon, Bravo in WI one-day squad
ST JOHN’S: The West Indies yesterday named their 14-man cricket squad for the one-day series against England, recalling batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul and fast bowler Merv Dillon for the first three of seven internationals. The players are two of the Windies most experienced, with Chanderpaul a veteran of 142 one-dayers and 74 Tests, and Dillon having taken 119 wickets in 98 One-Day Internationals and 131 in 38 Tests. Chanderpaul, 29, was omitted from the line-up for the Fourth and final Test in Antigua because of fatigue, but is leading Guyana in a warm-up match on Friday in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, ahead of Saturday’s start to the one-day series.
Dillon, 28, despite having taken the most wickets of any current player for the West Indies, was left out of all four Tests during England’s tour. Batsman Sylvester Joseph, 25, was also recalled for the first time since his three one-day matches in Australia in 2001. All-rounder Dwayne Bravo, 20, from Trinidad and Tobago, is the only newcomer. Left-handed all-rounder Ian Bradshaw, of Barbados, was chosen for the first time at international level for the one-day series in South Africa in January and February, but did not play in any of the seven matches.
The squad: captain Brian Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ricardo Powell, Dwayne Smith, Ryan Hinds, Sylvester Joseph, Ridley Jacobs, Dwayne Bravo, Ian Bradshaw, Mervyn Dillon, Ravi Rampaul and Corey Collymore.
