Begin writing your memoirs

THE EDITOR: Brian Lara has inscribed his name in the annals of Cricket Greats. His 400 not out score has distinguished him as the greatest scorer in test matches of all time. I predict that this record will remain intact for a long time. Going back into the history of Lara’s record, I can recall the many beautiful innings he played at Guaracara Park in earlier days. I became convinced that he was a hero in the making and a youth of boundless potential. He became my idol and I saw him as a seed of greatness germinating. I stuck to this view despite disagreements of contrary opinions from other players. Whenever he goes in to bat, he commands my undivided attention.  My eyes are glued upon him.

In cricket, as in many other games, progress is obtained by application and devotion. One gets from it what one puts into it. Lara makes the game his top priority and he ensures equal adoption by his colleagues. He is always ready and fit to play and maintains his best physical condition. Friends will know that our hero is no selfish player. He is always giving advice to help the younger players. We must remember that for most of his career so far, he has been bearing the heavy burden of captaincy — a responsibility that absorbs much energy and concentration, but is inimical to an individual’s progress.

Cricket is known as the gentleman’s game. Many will testify that Lara is a role model. Always keen and ready to help others, he becomes very much saddened when his friends fail through lack of experience and as some say “bad luck.” Trinidad and Tobago is proud of you, Brian. Keep the form going. The fans have crowded the media in their desire to compliment our hero. The storm of commendable comments by overwhelmed cricket fans is beginning to subside and give way to more sober assessments of our icon. We must acknowledge that his performance has stirred the cricket world as never before. To Lara — you must commence writing your memoirs, as it will be a source of great inspiration to many youths. Dear Brian, may the Almighty bless you with a long and exemplary life.
