Trumpet to blow away Bailey
NATIONAL welterweight champion Floyd Trumpet will have his chance to shut up Percy Bailey when Comic Boxing Promotions and the Point Fortin Borough Council put on a 10-fight — two professional, eight amateur —boxing card at Mahaica Oval, Point Fortin, on Wednesday. Bailey has been agitating for this match-up since mid-2003 and Trumpet assures that he will not like the reward of his work — an eight round meeting with the 147 lb “Fighting Postman” which Trumpet says will only last one round as he plans to knockout Bailey in the first chapter.
The bout will serve as a warm-up for Trumpet as he prepares for a Commonwealth title fight expected later this year. The second pro bout features Ria Ramnarine in a return from injury, which has seen her leave the ring for four months, keen on returning to form against Deidre Hamaguchi of the United States of America. Fine Line Gym’s latest contribution to the local boxing fraternity, Heavyweight Kenneth Bishop will face 200 lb Korrington Joseph of White Eagle Gym in the feature amateur fight and Sudesh Ramgoolie of Revival Boxing Gym faces Gideon Prince of Prince Gladiators.
Also on the card: Nick Boodram of Phoenix meets Aaron Prince of Prince Gladiators; Tigers’ Denzil Salazar meets Nigel Edwards; Michael Springer of Tigers meets Jules De Gannes of Revival; Edison Bonald of Biomel fights Kirt Blackwell of St Michael’s School for Boys; Aaron Hassette also of St Michael’s will fight Andrew Termin and Joseph Straker meets Devon Joseph.
