Ocean Spray partners with John Hayes

“We are excited to partner with Ocean Spray on this initiative and will work together to help raise awarenessvv about preventative measures that can be taken to maintain good kidney health,” said Martin Riley, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John Hayes Memorial Kidney Foundation.

The John Hayes Memorial Kidney Foundation helps hundreds of patients across the country get access to dialysis treatments. Kidney disease is particularly high-risk because of how slowly the disease develops in the body. Many patients go unaware of their condition for long periods of time because in most cases, symptoms in the body only start appearing at later stages of the disease.

Studies have increasingly shown that the cranberry is linked to maintaining low blood pressure, and namely, reducing risk for developing kidney stones and nurturing urinary tract health. “Everyone is aware that the cranberry is a power food rich in antioxidants, but the secret is in the polyphenols,” explained Wadha Eid, Marketing Manager at Pepsi Trinidad, local distributors of Ocean Spray. “They have a unique anti-adhesion property that prevents bacteria from sticking to cells, which could ultimately lead to relief from bacterial infections in the urinary system. For that reason, it’s critical that we champion programmes like this one in Trinidad.”

Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant also found in cocoa and grapes, but are particularly highly concentrated in cranberries.

A press conference will be held at the Pepsi Trinidad office in early April to further discuss this awareness initiative aimed at promoting a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. On that occasion, a cheque with the proceeds from the campaign will be officially given to a representative from the John Hayes Memorial Kidney Foundation.
