Seven years not enough for murderer Attin
THE EDITOR: I feel very strongly the need to reply to attorney Dana Seetahal’s suggestion that Chuck Attin had spent enough time in prison to qualify for a review of his sentence. Chuck Attin had been before the courts many times before his final, heinous crime. His lifestyle was far more advanced than his age. He had been charged for rape and theft, among other things. All the chances he got at juvenile level did not deter him from progressing into more wicked and violent crimes.
The murder that Attin and his accomplice committed at Westmoorings was not an act of panic in a robbery gone wrong. They knew that they were waiting on two young mothers who would be returning home with their children that afternoon. While they waited, they repeatedly raped and brutalised the maid in broad daylight. They ate, bathed and raped her again, all in the presence of a nursing infant. There are too many painful details to speak of on that horrific day.
Attin and his accomplice showed no mercy when the young mothers returned home and ambushed them, pulling them and the children into a bedroom. From there they took the women one by one into a separate bedroom where others including the children, heard screams of torture and death. Again, the details are too sordid and painful to go into. The pain of that day never passes and is severely worse when supposedly intelligent members of society try to make the culprit the victim. Miss Seetahal, have you ever enquired who looks after the children without their mother?
Who dries their tears, who checks their home work and who takes them to the dentist? Do you know the pain that the parents and husbands of these two women have to endure daily? Seven years is enough, says who? Certainly not someone who has felt the anguish that our families have. Such a recommendation is not acceptable especially when our society is being engulfed by violent crime. Most importantly Chuck Attin has never admitted, acknowledged or aplogised for what he has done.
