TT belongs to all of us

THE EDITOR: Is it that we  do  not  have  any  real  issues  in this  country  to discuss? Or is  it  that we  have  so many  men  with  so  few  brains? For a  country  that  produced world  class icons - men like Dr Pawan,  Sir Vidia Naipaul, Dr Eric  Williams, Derek Walcott, Cola Rienzi and  too many  more  to  be  named here,  we  now  seem to be cursed  with a league  of  extraordinary, stupid  gentlemen who always  seem  to prize themselves  as  being wise.

What  is “house padding?” What utter  rubbish. Mr Parsuram Maharaj in his  Newsday letter dated 23/04/04 has  the  gall to  affix his name to this article. Is it  that Indians (he  claims  to  speak  for them) do not  want  Africans  living next  to  them? Is  it  that because I am from Diego Martin, the only  place which  I  can move  to has  to  be one  located  in another PNM  constituency? Listen, this country belongs  to  all of  us, anyone can  live  anywhere!

Of  course, we live in a democratic country but I have serious problems with those who preach “one love” and  “national unity”  and yet harbour “ another” philosophy under their skins. His categorisation of  all government housing as “ghettoes”, is   symptomatic of a class  existing on the very periphery of our rainbow   society. Their  reasoning is  so  dark  that light cannot  penetrate. They are an endangered species staring extinction in the face. But  they  can no longer fool  those  they  claim to  represent.

Didn’t  he  think  that instead of feeding on the primitive fears of Indians, he should be encouraging them to  rise and demand their share of  Govt’s  housing programme?  Doesn’t  that  make  more  sense? What about those Indians who live in  squalor, who are so poor that they cannot even afford basic housing? Do they  not have the  right to government’s  housing programme?
