Malta Carib surf fishing May 16

THE Organising Committee of the second annual Fun Surf Fishing Tournament has approved a budget of more than $40,000 for this year’s competition scheduled for Sunday, May 16 at Manzanilla Beach. Hailed as the best organised tournament of its kind staged locally, it is the brainchild of Latiff Hosein, owner of LS Hosein Company Limited of Southern Main Road, Montrose, Chaguanas. Hosein said he has been working feverishly to gain corporate sponsorship to raise the required money to successfully stage the competition.

This year’s main sponsor will be Malta Carib. He has also once again enlisted the support of Dairy Dairy powdered milk, Newsday Newspaper and Blue Water bottled water. Also being approached are Pepsi and Southern Wholesale Stores who have  also pledged their assistance to make the competition a reality. Hosein expressed confidence that participants this year will surpass  the inaugural competition last year and is putting a limit of 225 adult fishers this time. Again he emphasised that to compete an adult must be accompanied by a child 15 years and under but provision will be made for persons who do not have children. Hosein stressed that the main focus of the day of fun and excitement on the Manzanilla surf will be the building of bonds between parents and their children. “Much of the problems we have in society today stem from the fact that there is hardly any
communication between parents and their children.

We hope by bringing them together we can advance the process of bridging the gap,” said Hosein. He said today’s young people are crying out for role models and there is no better person than a mother or father to point the way forward for their children into the future. He said attractive prizes, hampers, medals and trophies will be at stake for the outstanding fishers on May 16 and will exceed the more than 100 competitors who were rewarded last year. Among the prizes will be rod and reel fishing accessories Hosein said. Competitors can use a rod and reel, casters, plastic bottle with a line but nets will not be allowed and bait in “live’form must comply with standard procedure and be properly marked. Registration begins on Saturday and closes on May 7 at LS Hosein Supermarket at Montrose. The organiser can be contacted at telephone number 665-7091. Hosein said the Organising Committee of the tournament once again are giving of their time and expertise voluntarily and deserve the highest praise for their efforts.

The committee comprise Latiff Hosein, chairman/co-ordinator; Darryl Seucharan, assistant chairman/fish marshall; Akeel Mohammed of Nur-E- Islam Mosque in San Juan; Frankie Mohammed and Rudy Siewdass. “Last year the committee was complimented for the best ever surf fishing tournament ever and we are sure to be swamped by those wanting to compete this year. We are expecting a bigger better tournament,” said Hosein. He said all public facilities will be provided and safety of the participants and onlookers will be ensured to guarantee an incident free day of fun in the surf.
