Avoid petty politics

THE EDITOR: This man’s life reminds us all of the words from Galilee: “You have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy: but I say unto you Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you.” Nelson Mandela is a hero. He is an international icon whose legendary statute must not be used by narrow-minded men to promote petty sectional ambitions. An insult to Mr Mandela is an affront to the ideals which this paragon so inspirationally exemplifies.

The people of Trinidad and Tobago must not allow themselves to be smeared with the dishonour and shame of being involved in a scandalous squabble which resulted in an insult to an undisputed champion of human dignity. It is utterly disgraceful that we, in this country where every creed and race find an equal place, should drag the venerable name of Nelson Mandela into the slime of political propaganda. I am prepared to ignore the wisdom which advises: “Speak not in the ears of a fool for he will despise the wisdom of your words.” Please Mr Warner agree to permit the implementation of the proper protocol to give this great man his due. Every citizen of our country would want Nelson Mandela to be honoured as he deserves.

Permit us to give this hero of mankind the heartfelt welcome that the nation wants him to receive. It is a special privilege to be alive on this earth at a time when a man of his stature walks among us to lead and inspire by his example. We are morally obligated to welcome with love, respect and joyful national acclamation this outstanding human hero. Rise, Jack above the artificial divisions that separate us and even threaten to blind us from the reality of our common humanity. All we are saying, Mr Warner, is give love fa chance. Rise above your proprietorial claims on Mr Mandela and the political bickering to let Mr Mandela receive his due from all the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Long live Nelson Mandela the international champion of humanity.
