TT women start cricket defence at Monroe Road
Holders Trinidad and Tobago take on St Vincent and the Grenadines in the opening round of the West Indies Women’s Cricket Federation one-day limited-overs competition that bowls off on tomorrow. TT and SVG will clash at the Munroe Road in Cunupia, while former champions St Lucia and lowly-rated Grenada will do battle at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Barbados, who are returning to the championship after an absence of 22 years, face the lesser fancied Guyana at Barataria Oval. The championship will be contested over a round-robin format from May 4 to 12 before the elimination stages take place from May 14 to 16. Gayle Worrell-Daniel, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Board, said at the launch of the Championship on Thursday that the competition provides an opportunity for women representing their various countries to display their talents and in doing so further raise the interest of the game to women and girls throughout the region.
Worell-Daniel noted that the competition would also serve as useful preparation for the women, as they prepare for the IWCC World Cup South Africa 2005. “Without much fanfare, our West Indies women’s team have done us proud by qualifying for the World Cup, where they will compete against the best in the world such as Australia, England, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and host nation, South Africa,” Worrell-Daniel remarked.
