Eligon wins sprint triathlon crown

ANDREW ELIGON is the new national sprint triathlon king. The CCC Cyclones triathlete won the title at the championships co-sponsored  by Rotating Equipment Services, Courts (Trinidad) Ltd, UTC and Angostura, at Chaguaramas on Sunday. Eligon completed the 750 metres swim, 20-kilometres cycling and 5k run in 1:06.02, to finish a clear winner ahead of 17-year-old Jacob Charran of Rainbow Warriors who clocked 1:12.57. Team-mate Dennis Brown was next in 1:13.03. Last year’s winner Ancil Greene was disqualified.


Absent from Sunday’s field was national Olympic distance champ Jason Gooding, who is in Portugal for the World Triathlon Championships on Saturday. Veteran triathlete Jacqui Jodhan was the women winner in 1:23.20, ahead of Rebecca Bovell 1:29.10 with Shelly Ann Charles third in 1:38.27. The team of Eva Neemar (swim), Shannon Metivier (cycle) and Noel Nero (run) captured the Solimar-sponsored relay title in 1:04.05. Runners-up were Walter Roman, Howard Stewart and 14-year-old Martin Brown to get the prize of one month at Fitness Centre. For the third prize of one hour’s massage at Karin Rudd’s Clinic, was the team of Lee Hay, Gary Smith and Josef Walker.
