TT must act now to reduce crime

THE EDITOR: I am in New York to attend a conference organised by Columbia University’s National Centre on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA). I will also take the opportunity to close CBTT’s Annual Month of Prayer at the site of the 9/11 disaster which claimed the lives of thousands of people including a couple of our own citizens.

People in New York do not want to experience a disaster of that magnitude again. I am aware that while prayers can help to create a much more peaceful world, God is certainly not going to assist any country to do what it can do for itself. America and other countries which are at risk must be vigilant at all times. I have noticed that New Yorkers are very proud of their city and they have every right to be. After all crime is at a minimum. When I resided here many years ago, there were almost 1,000 murders annually. In 2002, less than 200 murders were recorded. My hope is that sweet TT will also be able to reduce its crime rate considerably in the earliest possible time.
