Muslim Credit Union opens southern branch
On Saturday the credit union officially opened its south office during a small ceremony held at the corner of Cipero and Donaldson Streets in San Fernando. MCU’s president Jamsheed Khan noted that previously staff members met with customers only on Thursdays at another location in San Fernando.
With the opening of the south office, Khan promised that customers can now look forward to a range of services. He admitted that the credit union faced some challenges in the past and reminded them that MCU survived two financial blows “despite detractors and ill-wishers”.
Khan added, “Our past three financial audits continue to show growth and strength. This credit union was designed for persons of middle and low incomes. We also cater for micro enterprises and we are interest-free.”
Saying the credit union could not succeed by itself, Khan encouraged southerners to “interact” with staff. He also promised to not let customers down as staff members are “continuing to work hard and show progress”.
The MCU’s head office is located at Eastern Main Road, San Juan.
Senior co-operative officer at the Labour Ministry, Angela Ramkissoon, noted that credit unions are a type of cooperatives and agreed that such establishments are “there for the poor man”.
