Speak, Dr Rowley
THE EDITOR: It is with amazement and amusement that we as citizens are once again treated to this circus that is national governance. The suggestion by the PM that the NHA was wrong in their approach to the squatters at Union Hall was in part understandable, only with respect to the time lag that existed between the initial notice and the subsequent action taking three years. However, the NHA was performing its functions as expected and mandated by the government of the day, one of which is to address the land stealing that has become a literal business endeavour by some pretentious, quasiless-deprived.
The Minister of Housing has been suspiciously silent on this issue given the fact that the NHA and the LSA fall directly under the portfolio of the Ministry of Housing. Ultimately the buck stops with the PM. Politicising this issue in an unscholarly attempt to gain sympathetic support from the population is not only disturbing but highlights the unjust and unfortunate position the population is often cornered into due to political party affiliations.
Regardless of the mechanisms by which of the Government agencies involved, the outcome remains the same for both the residents of Cashew Gardens and Union Hall — homelessness. The ‘humane’ response by the PM with respect to his constituents should have also been afforded to all persons made homeless by whatever agency involved. Again, this exemplifies the discrimination and politicisation that is now pathogenic in our political landscape. Further to this, it is my respectful opinion having attempted to understand the roles of the various agencies; it is not the responsibility of the NHA to relocate the displaced but in fact the duty of the LSA. Dr Rowley given your neutrality and uncharacteristic silence on this matter — can you correct me? Please say something!
