Top Of The Class on show Saturday

Last year’s triple crown winner and crowd favourite Top Of The Class is scheduled to make his seasonal debut at Santa Rosa Park, Arima on Saturday. The son of Freshly Squeezed/Crescendo who topped the earnings list last year and was voted most popular racehorse by punters will oppose five runners in an Allowance feature on the Arima Race Club Round 14 programme. Ricardo Jadoo, who piloted Top Of The Class to victory in all three classics and the Caribbean Champion Stakes, to add a million dollars in bonuses  from insurance giants CLICO, will again team up with the local bred four-year-old  in the 1750 metres contest on Saturday’s 10-race programme.

Facing off with the Rupert Leong Poi and Merlin Samlalsingh-owned colt are Punto A Punto, Man of Class, Tactical Bid and trainer John O’Brien’s two-pronged attack of Gray Warrior and Millenium Reign. The Restricted Handicap, which attracted a list of 12 runners at entry stage on Monday will field a cast of nine. The 1200 metres sprint, which will act as the supporting feature on Saturday’s programme saw Honour Bound sidestepping the engagement, and Bon Voyage and Game High being re-routed to separate claiming events.

The $6,000 claimer, framed for over 1000 metres on the turf course was discarded for failure to attract sufficient entries. But the West Indian Bred three-year-old maiden event created no worries. The 1350 metres contest attracted 25 runners from the total of 91 set to go to post on Saturday. The healthy entries in the extended sprint forced the ARC to split the event, giving punters their customary ten races.
