Mangroo pedals to victory in Mudland

GEORGETOWN: Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Stephen Mangroo captured Guyana’s National Sports Commission (NSC) Three-Stage cycle road race on Sunday in spite of a narrow loss in the final stage. Mangroo, who entered the last stage on Sunday with a slim lead, finished a close second to Tyrone Hamilton in 100-kilometre final stage and took the overall title in a time of seven hours, three minutes, and five seconds.

Hamilton won two of the three stages but had to settle for second in a time of 7:03:10, while Alex Mendes and Raymond Newton, both clocked 7:09:48 to tie for third. Entering Sunday’s final stage with an eight second lead, Mangroo, who had won the first stage and placed second to Hamilton in the second stage, clocked the same 2:52:00 as Hamilton to clinch the title. “I rode the whole race really strong, from the first stage to the end,” Mangroo told reporters after his win. He is expected to compete in the Tour de Martinique later this month. Marlon Morrison (7:10:59) was fifth and Junior Niles (7:12:13) finished sixth. (CMC)
