Brown wins 100m in Mexico

MEXICO CITY: World record holder Tim Montgomery finished sixth in the 100 metres behind winner Darrel Brown of Trinidad and Tobago at the Banamex Grand Prix. Brown won the dash in 10.11 seconds, well off last year’s winning time of 10.03. American Mickey Grimes was second in 10.14 and countryman Bernard Williams was third in 10.15. “This is just to prepare for Athens,” Williams said. “I felt good.” Montgomery’s 10.24 was good enough for sixth at Olympic Stadium, where American James Hines ran a world-record 9.95 in the 1968 Olympics. Jon Drummond fell five metres before the finish line.

“They started too fast,” Drummond said. “I felt a spasm in my back and went down. I’ve never fallen before.” American Allen Johnson blew out the field in the 110 hurdles to finish first in 13.08. The four-time world champion said the result gave him extra confidence as he prepares for the summer Olympics in Athens. “It was a good result. I’ll take a 13.08 any day,” Johnson said. “I plan on winning the gold medal.” American Dominique Arnold finished second with a 13.39, and Cuban Yoel Hernandez came in third running a 13.42. In the women’s 100, Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas won in 11.436, barely beating American Chryste Gaines (11.439).  American Torri Edwards finished third in 11.49. Spaniard Antonio Reina won the mens 800 metre race in 1:46.90, narrowly edging out Canadian Achraf Tadili, who clocked a 1:47.18. Kenyan Bernard Lagat finished third in 1:47.50.
