Welcome boost for IMA

THE EDITOR: Con-gratulations are in order to the Government, specifically the Public Utilities and Environ-ment Ministry, on their new programme providing $41.3 million for the upgrading of the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA). Though such a programme is long overdue, it is still a refreshing move by the Government towards the further development and protection of this country’s marine ecosystem. Are we finally beginning to see the value of our fragile ecosystem?

Or is it that such funding came about primarily because of this Institutions’ beneficial utilisation in the new University of Trinidad and Tobago? According to Minister Colm Imbert, the IMA will be one of several institutions to form the core of this University. Whatever the reasons, it is indeed very interesting to see the Government engaging in such a positive way in the nation’s economic and environmental growth, by providing this generous endorsement. Who knows, maybe our marine creatures can hope for a better, safer life. Or is that hoping too far?
