Haynes, Garner for KFC ‘Super Sixes’

FORMER Test cricket greats Joel Garner and Desmond Haynes will be featured in an ex-Barbados national team in the 2004 KFC Super Sixes Cricket Tournament to be played over the Labour Day weekend at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre and Munroe Road. This was revealed by  Prestige Holdings marketing manager Nigel Bissoon at a news conference at the Cascadia Hotel, St  Ann’s, yesterday. Eight teams will contest the tournament first played last year. Winners will take away the KFC Trophy and $20,000, while the runners-up get $10,000.

Teams are Trinidad and Tobago to be led by Test batsman Daren Ganga,  Trinidad and Tobago Under-19s, with Dinesh Ramdin at the helm and an ex-national team skippered by Anthony Gray, an ex-Barbados team, defending champions Alescon Comets, CLICO Preysal, Ceramic Merryboys and hosts Munroe Road. Matches will be of six overs duration and involve six players per team.  First six matches of the 12-game preliminary round will be played at Guaracara Park under floodlights, while the other six as well as the semi-finals and final take place at Munroe Road, Cunupia. Prestige Holdings chief executive officer Dane Darbasie said sponsorship of this tournament is just a way for KFC to give back to the nation for supporting their restaurants for such a long time. “We believe that we must give back to the community that has supported us so much and we see sport as vital to a country’s development.”

The fast food outlet’s communications consultant Niel Giuseppi noted the organisers are looking to bring in more regional teams in the future as well as increase prizes. Franklyn Stephenson who flew in from Barbados for the launch, said it was a great initiative by the sponsors and vowed  his team which includes Desmond Haynes, Garner, Ezra Moseley, Carlisle Best and Vasbert Drakes will win and take the  prizes to Barbados.

Teams: Group A - Trinidad and Tobago; Ex-Trinidad and Tobago; Trinidad and Tobago Under-19s; Ex-Barbados. Group B - Alescon Comets; Ceramic Merryboys; Munroe Road; CLICO Preysal.
