Man paralysed after shooting at bar

A 37-year-old man is paralysed from his chest down after he was shot twice when he entered a bar while a robbery was in progress. Police have since detained three persons for questioning in connection with the armed robbery and shooting incident. Around 8.30 pm on Thursday, Jeremiah Callender entered Crimson Lights Restaurant and Bar at Siparia Oropouche Road, Siparia, and was ordered to lie on the floor by two armed men.

Callender refused and the gunmen shot him twice — on his left leg and left shoulder. When he slumped to the floor the gunmen and another man fled the scene on foot, escaping with an undisclosed sum of cash and mobile phones they had stolen from patrons. An EHS ambulance rushed the bleeding man to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors told police one of the bullets lodged itself in the victim’s spinal cord. He was warded in a stable condition. Visiting the scene was a party of officers headed by Insp Wells and including Cpls Minors, Gueverra, PCs Ramdass and Ramraj. The latter is continuing investigations.

And one hour prior to this incident, a lone knife-wielding bandit held up a gas station attendant  who was on duty at a service station opposite Iere High School and robbed him of $750. Shorty after police arrested a 19-year-old suspect of Laventille and recovered the cash. PC Ramraj charged the suspect who is expected to appear before a Siparia magistrate tomorrow.
