Under-19 women win at last in Canada

MONTREAL: Trinidad and Tobago finally got a win at the CONCACAF Under-19 women’s football finals when they defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1 at the Molson Stadium on Tuesday evening. Shurell Burton and Kennya Cordner got the goals to secure TT’s close win in Group “B”, while the other Caribbean team Jamaica lost their last match to Panama to end with a winless record in Group “A”.

Beaten by Costa Rica (1-4) and the USA (1-11) in their previous matches, Trinidad and Tobago started well against the Dominican Republic and led through Burton’s goal after only 13 minutes.  DR forward Yohanna Santelis equalised in the 45th minute but Cordner notched the match-winner immediately after for TT’s success, giving them third in the group.

Reigning FIFA Under-19 world champions USA ended top of the Group “B” standings on goal difference after a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica.
In Group “A”, Panama netted a goal in each half to defeat Jamaica 2-0 at the Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa.  Goals by forwards Yohan Rodriguez (36th) and Amarelis DeMera (85th) led the Panamanians to their win over the Reggae Girlz, who had previously lost to Canada (0-4) and Mexico (2-6).  Canada topped Group “A” when they defeated Mexico 3-0 to become the only team to win all their first round matches. The semi-finals will take place at the Molson Stadium tomorrow with the USA taking on Mexico and Canada meeting Costa Rica. The semifinal losers will meet in the third-place match scheduled for Sunday.
