Stars soften Hard Core in Squash League

PETE WARD of Petrotrin Stars overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Andy Hopwood of Queen’s Park Hard Core 5-9, 2-9, 9-5, 9-5, 9-5 in Division “A” of the 2004 National Squash League at the Queen’s Park Oval Courts. Petrotrin, the 2003 “A” Division winners, won the tie by a 3-2 margin last Wednesday. Top veteran John Holley crushed Mark Laughlin 9-0, 9-3, 9-2 while Dirk Prudent, an ex-national champion, eased past Richard Hart 9-4, 9-6, 9-7 as Petrotrin surged to a 2-0 lead. But Hard Core showed their mettle as Brian Jackson got past Peter Pirtheesingh 9-5, 9-7, 9-3 while Bob Ramchand whipped Paul F De Verteuil 9-5, 9-2, 9-5.

Ward will later have the final say for Petrotrin, as they seek to retain their title. In another Division “A” contest, Queen’s Park Old Navy inflicted a 4-1 beating on Klub Squash with Paul Jerome De Verteuil trouncing Omar De Four 9-6, 9-4, 9-2; Marc Pontifex getting the better of Julien Henry 9-4, 6-9, 9-7, 9-2; Nicholas McGrath whipping Lleandro De Four 9-3, 4-9, 9-3, 9-2; and Mark Jardine hammering Brian Phillips 9-4, 9-6, 9-5. The lone Klub Squash victory was earned by William Bhola, who crushed Nasser Abdul 9-1, 9-6, 9-1.
