Joe Public edge Caroni 2-1 to go clear

EASTERN Lions Joe Public have gone two points clear atop the standings in the 2004 National Super League following a 2-1 win over Caroni at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna on Tuesday. After Anton Quashie gave the Central lads a shock 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, former national Under-20 midfielder Kevaughn Connell replied with two goals for the hosts, in the 67th minute and in stoppage time. Police, who shared the lead with Joe Public entering Tuesday’s round of matches, slipped to fifth on the standings after they lost 1-0 to WASA Clean and White at the WASA Grounds, St Joseph. Darren Modeste’s 88th minute strike proved to be the difference between both teams in a keenly-fought encounter.

L-Sporto Crab Connection moved to third spot on the table after a 3-0 whipping of Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima. Irving Trim (24th) and Kirston Graham (29th) put Connection 2-0 up at the half-hour mark, with Marcus Ambrose netting the third in the 76th. Holding down fourth spot is Harvard, who withstood a late surge from Maraval Youth Academy to prevail 2-1 in the second match of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. Defender Ishmael Muhammad scored two first-half freekicks, in the 25th and 33rd minutes, with Shaton Ollivierre getting the consolation for Maraval in the 53rd.

In the earlier match, Superstar Rangers eased past Biwater Stokelyvale 2-0 courtesy of an own goal in the 21st and another from Leon Cox in the 32nd. Both Moruga and Medianet East San Juan United were 3-1 winners over Carib and Club Sando respectively. At the Otis Memorial Park, Moruga got goals from Dameon Hamilton (34th), Stephon Bereton (57th) and Damion La Fortune (85th) with Billy Dee Scantlebury getting Carib’s lone strike in the 66th. Marlon Lewis gave Sando a 1-0 advantage after six minutes, but his team’s joy was shortlived at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, as San Juan stormed back with three goals from Wendell Isaac (12th), Kevin Baptiste (18th) and Allan Sorzano (84th).
