Oxford lift San fernando t-tennis title

OXFORD scored a thrilling 3-2 victory over Union/Claxton Bay to win the Division 2 Deans Coating and Lining-sponsored San Fernando Zone table tennis team title. After romping past Petrotrin 3-0, the Oxford men who also whipped the “oilmen” 3-1, faced Oxford in the final on Monday night at the Union/Claxton Bay Senior Comprehensive School. Zainool Mohammed put the UCB team ahead after whipping Richard Ramdeen 12-10, 11-6, 11-8, only for David Ramdin to knot up the scores with victory over Wesley Dookhoo 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5.

Christopher Nanan gave Oxford the lead when he triumphed over Ramjit Mahase 11-6, 11-5, 11-5. But in the game of the night, Mohammed came from two sets down to edge Ramdin 6-11, 11-13, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9 to again level the scores 2-2. Ramdeen won the deciding fifth game in four sets over Dookhoo 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6. On Wednesday UCB, Oxford, Trinmar and Petrotrin were joined by Wazuri of the North Zone which included Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association (TTTTA) President Stanley Hunte, Richard Loregnard and Fernando Castillo for the Over-40 team competition

Selwyn Singh and Bob Roopnarine of UCB were the players of the night as they finished unbeaten the latter coming back from two games down against Loregnard to win 3-2 in the UCB Wazuri clash. Singh in turn got his most challenging outing against Oxford’s Narace Jodhan eventually winning the match-up 3-2. At the end of the night Singh, Roopnarine and UCB team-mate Zainool Mohammed received top honours to see their team in first place with four wins ahead of Trinmar on three wins and one loss in second, Wazuri third with two wins and two losses and Petrotrin propping up the table without a win.
