Joe Public, WASA win big

JOE PUBLIC and WASA Clean and White recorded convincing victories over Police and Medianet East San Juan United respectively, when the 2004 National Super League continued on Friday. At the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna, the “Eastern Lions” Joe Public inflicted a 5-2 drubbing on the lawmen while WASA thrashed San Juan 5-1 at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima. Curt Danclair scored a 16th minute penalty for Police but the Lions responded with a three-goal burst, from Jamal Hamid in the 36th, national Under-23 midfielder Devon Caseman in the 52nd and Roen Nelson two minutes later.

Neri Joseph reduced Police’s deficit to 3-2 when he scored in the 62nd, but Joe Public got two more strikes to extend their win-streak to five matches — from striker Nigel Hart in the 74th and Nelson in the 79th. Brian Bain got a first-half double, in the 12th and 45th minutes, to put WASA 2-0 up at the interval, while Darren Modeste (63rd) and Kirth Hutchings (79th) made it 4-0 for the St Joseph-based squad before Dexter Jorsling pulled back one for San Juan in the 87th. Keston Thomas got the final item for WASA in stoppage time as they remain second on the standings with 13 points, two behind Joe Public. Also maintaining their unbeaten early-season form is Harvard, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago. Christian Freitas gave Harvard an early lead, after 16 minutes of play, but Curtis Trim converted a 24th minute penalty for the hosts.

Superstar Rangers registered their first victory of the season, defeating Club Sando 2-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium with goals from Jason Charles (24th) and Chem McFarlane (55th) while Maraval Youth Academy got a double from Ainsley Joyeau, in the 40th and 45th minutes, as they eased past Moruga 2-0 at the Trinity College Grounds, Maraval. In the second match of a double-header at Arima, Caroni had to thank goalkeeper Curtis Granger who made a series of timely saves and deflections to ensure a goalless draw against L-Sporto Crab Connection. Connection dictated the pace for most of the match but were thwarted time and time again by Granger and their own poor shooting, but the Febeau Village, San Juan-based team remain third on the table with ten points. One match was scheduled to take place last evening, with Biwater Stokelyvale hosting cellar-placed Carib at the Dwight Yorke Stadium.
