Sparrow gets his ORTT

President Anthony Carmona will host a ceremony for the presentation of the National Award to the Mighty Sparrow, at the National Academy for Performing Arts (NAPA), 119 Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain, on June 11.

In February, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced calypso legend Slinger “The Mighty Sparrow” Francisco will be awarded this country’s highest honour– the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago — for his contribution to music and culture.

She indicated that it was a fitting tribute to his contribution both regionally and internationally.

The Mighty Sparrow was also given a cheque amounting to US $60,000 to assist with his medical bills

However, the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism is currently in positive discussions with the Mighty Sparrow and his family, to acquire the personal collections of memorabilia that he has gathered through the decades of his career.

It is intended that the collection will be made available for public viewing, especially to the youths of TT primary and secondary schools, to ensure that insight into the prolific career of the Mighty Sparrow is transmitted to the next generation.
