Enforce abortion law now!

From the abundance of evidence surfacing on a regular basis, the whole scandal and ruthless racket is something out in the open. The law must act now... And the vampire called ASPIRE must expire, without having one single drop of blood from our innocent children. Section 56 of The Offences Against the Person Act reads, “Every woman, being with child, who, with intent to procure her own miscarriage, unlawfully administers to herself poison or noxious things, or unlawfully uses any instrument or other means whatsoever, with the like intent and any person who, with intent to procure the miscarriage of any woman, whether she is or is not with child, unlawfully administers to her, or causes to be taken by her any poison or noxious thing, or unlawfully uses any instrument or other means whatsoever with the like intent, is liable to imprisonment for four years.” Section 57 states, “Any person who unlawfully supplies or procures any poison or other noxious thing, or any instrument or thing whatsoever, knowing that the same is intended to be unlawfully used or employed with intent to procure the miscarriage of any woman, whether she is or is not with child, is liable to imprisonment for two years.”

As the law indicates, it is abundantly clear that abortion is illegal in the Republic of Trinidad and To-bago. The law is as unequivocal as those dealing with murder, manslaughter, rape, incest, narcotics or any other crime. This leaves me quite baffled, I mean, really baffled, as to how people can so blatantly, and with such impunity, break the abortion law, even as serious as it is. Pro-abortion lawyers and doctors also seem to brag that “the abortion law is not working.” This, in obvious mocking, satirical reference to the non-enforcement of the law. Newspaper reports of last weekend indicate that some 19,000 women in TT are breaking the abortion law each year, by having “backyard” procedures. This costs the State a crippling $1,000,000 per month. One would imagine that the numbers that flout the law through “front yard” procedures (illegal abortion done by qualified doctors) would also be quite huge.  The pains, suffering and death demand a speedy enforcement of the law.

One medical doctor has openly spoken about Ward 31 at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, which is referred to as the “slip and slide” (abortion) ward. From the abundance of evidence surfacing on a regular basis, the whole scandal and ruthless racket is something out in the open. Everybody knows not only the victims, but the criminal perpetrators, yet, for some mysterious reason, the law enforcement agencies appear to adopt a hands-off policy in these shameless acts of butchering and slaughter. I would not even bother to go into “technical arguments” as to whether or not abortion should be legalised. There are many people who, by intelligent, well-researched work, have already done a splendid job in the media at exposing the lies, hypocrisy, treachery and the duplicitous tactics of those who are suggesting that we should legalised this act of plain, cold-blooded murder. Our focus must be on enforcing the law. We must hunt down the criminals involved and put a definite stop to their vicious carnage.

In a conference recently held at Crowne Plaza in Port-of-Spain one local medical doctor related how he had seen “women come into Ward 31 with cassava sticks up in their vagina, which were used to induce an abortion.” Did this doctor call the police upon the discovery of this bizarre criminal act? If it were a patient with a bullet lodged in his/her body, wouldn’t the doctor have called the police?  I say again, it’s time for decisive action. We know that in dealing with the abortion problem, attention will also have to be given to social issues, family life, economic and spiritual factors and related areas. But enforcement of the law is the only way to restore some sanctity and sobriety. Imagine an attorney-at-law, of all persons, having the audacity (or rather, absurdity) to actually say that because a large number of people have been breaking a particular law, this means that the particular crime — abortion should be legalised. If we were to follow the ludicrous rationale of this attorney, we would then have to declare illegal guns and drugs which are everywhere despite the law, decriminalise “since the law is not working.” The same would also have to be done to rape, incest and even murder, which is now virtually par for the course in TT.

It’s this same “brilliant” lawyer and her blood-thirsty minions who have submitted “draft legislation” to the Government, demanding that a school child under the age of 14 (this means ages like 12 and 13) who thinks that she needs an abortion, after becoming pregnant, be given the right to walk into any abortion clinic and have the procedure, without notifying her parents or having any consent whatsoever from them. These are the kinds of sick, barbarous minds that are desperately ASPIRING to reshape the value systems of our families and dictate the lifestyles and culture of our children. With all their angel-of-light euphemisms and code languages, they team up with their butcher doctor friends who sharpen their knives, quoting all kinds of massive phoney statistics, while advocating the legalising of the slaughter of the innocents, so they can further fatten their pockets and bank accounts with blood money.  But thank God we still have a nation of wise, discerning and largely God-fearing people, who possess consciences. That’s why this vampire called ASPIRE shall expire, without having one single drop of blood from our innocent children.
