Now Teaching Service Commission under scrutiny

ONE WEEK after the Police Service Commission (PSC) came under the parliamentary microscope (during debate on the Police Reform Bills), the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) will face similar scrutiny when its members appear before a public meeting of the parliamentary Joint Select Committee (JSC) (Municipal Corporations and Service Commissions) at the Red House tomorrow at 10 am. Among the issues which the JSC will address with the TSC, Education Ministry and the Denominational School Boards at tomorrow’s meeting are disciplinary procedures, performance evaluation and promotions, systems and procedures for teacher recruitment and filling of vacancies and school management and the Concordat.

According to Section 66A of the constitution, the JSC was established to consider and report on the operations of municipal corporations and service commissions, with the exception of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission. The 12-member JSC is chaired by Independent Senator Prof Ramesh Deosaran, and includes Works Minister Franklyn Khan, Social Services Delivery Minister Christine Kangaloo and Naparima MP Nizam Baksh. The JSC (Government Ministries, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises — Part II) will also meet tomorrow at the Red House from 10.30 am. This JSC is chaired by Independent Senator Mary King and its members include Junior National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, Minister in the Ministry of Finance Christine Sahadeo and Caroni Central MP Dr Hamza Rafeeq.
