Atlantic LNG cricket camps start
The 2004 Atlantic LNG cricket coaching clinic bowled off last Monday at two venues in Point Fortin. Some 215 students from schools in the Point Fortin area started the intensive two-week training courtesy Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad and Tobago. The camp which features budding cricketers from nine schools in the community is being conducted by Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) coach, Bachan Boochoon at Coronation Park and Fanny Village. Marlon Grant, Atlantic’s Community Relations Officer said the camp was a natural extension of the company’s sponsorship of the recently concluded Trinidad and Tobago Primary Schools cricket competition. Cricket in the Point Fortin area has been in the doldrums for some time.
TTCB Marketing Officer Suruj Ragoonath said the coaching camp would go a long way in developing cricket in the south-western region of Trinidad which he feels has been neglected for too long. “The talent in this region has been neglected as far as the development of cricket is concerned. This camp is very critical in this respect since it is aimed at harnessing the talent at an early age. This effort by Atlantic LNG will enable us to unearth and develop the cricketing talents of these youngsters. The whole of Trinidad and Tobago stands to benefit from an exercise such as this,” Ragoonath, a former national opening batsman said. The former Trinidad and Tobago captain who played one Test for the West Indies said the TTCB welcomed any positive initiative from corporate sponsors such as Atlantic LNG, in assisting in the development of social and sporting lifestyles of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
